Time to talk a little bit about this coming spring!

3/6/06

So it is finally time to start talking about what we will see this spring. Though I am premature by a few months I will start by talking about Cobia and what weather patterns we are seeing that should have an effect on when they get here. Last year we had extremely large fish in the area but it seemed like there were less fish total than usual and they all showed up later than what we are use to around here. All of this can be attributed to the fact that the temperatures south of us were much cooler last year at this time than they are this year so our fish should show up earlier this year. Trips most likely can be scheduled to start looking for cobia around April 15th, which would return us to a more normal schedule. The warmer we stay between now and then the more set up the fish and bait will be just off shore. The full moon is April 13th so that means those extreme tides will be pushing bait up into the rivers around that time and we all know what follows the bait inshore. So get your 10 to 12 weights ready to sight cast to one of these monsters on a fly or get out the spinning gear and prepare for a battle.
Now for what we can start looking for in terms of Redfish; they are still in fairly large schools though I feel we will soon have fish starting to split off and becoming more active. I have been seeing this a little bit already. This means they should be more spread out increasing likely spots and be more active soon to start foraging for bait. As soon as I feel that you can start looking for tails in a few months I will put a report up about that.
If you are going to book a Cobia or Redfish trip in late April or throughout May do it soon, this part of the books are already getting bookings and filling up pretty quick.
Until Next Tide,
Capt. Tuck Scott
