Well it has been a pretty strange Cobia season.
Though we able to sight cast to a lot of fish early in the season
most of them were pretty small and numbers on a chum bag were certainly
lower than usual. We put quite a few on the fly the largest being
about 40 lbs, though we had a shot on the fly at what I believe to
be about 70lbs but lost the fish. The largest we sight cast to and
caught was 60lbs.
When the tides have been right we have seen a good number of tailing
reds at this point and put plenty of them on the fly. I have not been
seeing hardly any schools of fish at this point but one to three fish
have been about the norm for seeing fish together tailing or cruising
the grass line. We have also had pretty good luck blind casting into
grass areas with something weedless where we have seen tails even
if they are not there that day. This pattern should be consistent
for the rest of the summer.
Other patterns that should be consistent for this summer are the fairly
high number of Ladyfish that are in as well as some large summer trout.
Though we really haven't been fishing for them I have seen a lot of
flounder come to the boat as well.
I will keep you up dated on the Tarpon when we start to see them.
I have heard a few reports but nothing to get excited about yet here
in Beaufort. Around the middle of July should be the time to start
thinking about a trip for Tarpon.
Let us know how we can help you here.
Until Next Tide,
Capt. Tuck Scott
